If you sat down and tried really hard to imagine the perfect knight, you would imagine something or someone miraculously close to Alastor. He is selfless, devoted to the masses, protector of the innocent, etc etc. He's always ready to fight on someone's behalf if their cause is just. He's almost medieval in his thinking style, which makes him and Huginn pretty good friends (despite most of the horses understandable fear of Huginn). Alastor enjoys being told what to do and likes being given orders, so he is a very good knight for Basileus' purposes as he does what he's told without complaint. That is not to say that Alastor is naïve or dumb; he questions bad decisions sometimes, and recognizes that leaders are only as strong as their advisers, but so far he likes and trusts Basileus.
Currently Alastor has developed feelings for another stallion as Clovercliff named Caribee, who is in the knight squad singularly because him and Alastor as best friends. Also Caribee was kind of "assigned" to the knights by Basileus (Caribee's other good friend) just to keep an eye on all the tolts in it. Alastor quite likes Caribee and is fascinated by the stallion's natural laziness. He finds Caribee's selfishness intriguing because Alastor has never been exposed to someone like that before. It sounds conflicting, but Alastor likes Caribee for how very different he is from everyone else Alastor has ever known. He also listens to Caribee a lot, and respects the advice he offers on a wide number of topics. Alastor is a good leader for the knights because the other horses respect him.
