Merlin is the Google of Clovercliff stables. He comes off as knowing all, but not in an obnoxious way; moreso that he can relied upon to provide answers to literally any question. If he doesn't actually know the answer than he has some sort of common-sense suggestion or related advice. The horses at Clovercliff often approach him with random questions or problems, and Merlin doesn't mind their intrusions. He likes working at new problems in the way some humans like working at knots. Merlin rarely raises his voice about a soft murmur and doesn't seem to ever get angry; he becomes annoyed if he's asked for advice and the horse then doesn't comply to it, but he doesn't yell at them about it, he only gives them a quietly disapproving look. (With Merlin's soft face, the latter is far worse than being yelled at.)
He's charismatic and very likeable, and gets along with nearly everyone he encounters. This is a benefit to Merlin, because he gleans the majority of his knowledge from others. As a foal he spoke to anyone who would stop to listen and he memorized what they told him. As he grew he got better at this and began learning on his own terms; exploring the natural world and eavesdropping on any intelligent human conversations. Since he's been at Clovercliff he's found a solid friend in Pascoe, who also appreciates learning things and figuring problems out on his own. He also became a good friend to Felix; in fact he learned Spanish in order to speak with him, which Felix was very flattered by. Merlin appreciates Felix's endless optimism and finds it amusing in the face of a problem with a clear (and depressing) resolution.
