Asphodel is an odd horse. She tells the others around Clovercliff that she is older than she looks; that she is older than this body, even. She tells them she doesn't mind what gender pronouns they use because she has been everything else before. She tells them that she loves Fox because she is an old soul in a young body. Mostly they ignore her or think she's making up a story to make her life more interesting but in reality Asphodel is telling the truth. There is a legend in Greek mythology that if you are particularly kind and compassionate in three lives you will be reincarnated into the Isle of the Blessed. Asphodel tells everyone there was a mix-up somewhere because instead she ended up here, a horse.
Considering this it's no surprise they're so pessimistic and solemn. They have seen it all, by their standards; they've seen the scope of morality in all its forms. They don't believe in the best outcome and they never believe good things happen randomly. They're not so keen on the concept of Fate, these days. Fate led them into a horse when they were promised an island paradise. They take most things very literally and oftentimes have trouble wrapping their heads around a joke. Fox has been working with them on this. She finds it infinitely hilarious that her mate can't understand half her jokes, but loves them for it all the same.
