Roy has terrible social anxiety. He's very withdrawn around the rest of the herd, and given how many quiet members are currently living at Clovercliff, another one's presence is very noticeable. It's not that he thinks he's superior or that he finds them boring; it's simply that Roy is terrible at speaking to other horses. He has very little confidence in himself and kind of admires Lark for how arrogant he is; if Roy had even an ounce of that maybe he'd be able to talk to all those horses that he's always wanted to. If someone persists in trying to befriend him they can eventually squeeze in, but it's a long and arduous process. When Roy is uncomfortable or anxious or scared he removes himself from whatever situation is bothering him; and given that it's usually another horse trying to speak to him, making friends is nigh impossible. (Thankfully he's got his father, who at least shares Roy's anxiety when it comes to mares. They've grown very close since he arrived.)
To Monarch (and perhaps later friends) Roy is almost painfully sweet. He's very kind to absolutely everybody and everything; he'll help hurt animals, crushed plants, whatever. The language barrier means nothing to him. When he was younger he learned some Spanish from Felix and so he talks to him sometimes, when Fox is busy elsewhere and Felix looks lonely. Roy has a soft spot for people; those who are lonely, sad, different. Neither Cassiopeia nor Ophelia mind him and let him keep them company during the quiet evening they watch the stars; he doesn't actually bother them, and Roy is a rather large Tolter so his bulk is comforting in the dark. He would comfort just about anybody and he's so darn optimistic that sometimes it's annoying; but mostly it's sweet. To Lark he needs protecting, both from other horses and from the cruelties of the world.
