There is something odd about Cernunnos. All the horses at Clovercliff know this and all of them whisper of it. He is simply... odd. He's quiet in conversation, often looking out into space over your shoulder even while you speak directly to him. He gets distracted by the sounds of birds and the movement of deer. He wanders into the woods that frame Clovercliff Ranch and does not reappear for days. He carries his head as though there is a weight there, as though he is closer to the stags the horses see flit between the trees than he is to them. The deer are not afraid of him and neither are the other wild creatures; they venture out of the brush, raccoons and foxes and birds and a few hesitating bears. There must be some sort of communication established for none act untoward when with him. He is accompanied often by birds, scattered on his shoulders and back, perched in his mane and between his ears like a crown. He does not talk often to the horses but rather speaks in low tones to the animals. Mostly the other horses find this very unnerving.
On the infrequent times he can be coaxed to conversation he is distant. He talks a lot of animals and trees and not a lot of gossip. Although he knows every horse at Clovercliff by name and reputation he rarely talks about them himself and never joins a conversation with a clear invitation. He approaches every situation with chivalry, to a near medieval point. For example, he speaks in a very precise and careful way and also very slowly, as though he must consider each word before he can say it aloud. He is also stiffly polite and formal to all. Cernunnos is often accompanied by a small flock of birds but there are two who are constantly at his side: Brighid and Sucellos. The first is a pudgy female black-capped chickadee, brash and loud who he fondly calls "Brig". The second is an oddly small male robin who is sleepy and kind and often perches in between Cernunnos' ears.
